How to do Assessment before the Alcohol & Drug Test

Assessment on the other hand is given and provided for those who are suspected for using illegal drugs because of sudden changes on his behavior or physical appearances. The assessor or the person who will be doing the assessment must know how to gain the trust of the patient, must be very patient and know exactly the nature of alcohol and drug addiction. These assessments can be performed in an isolated or specialized place for legal purposes. It will keep the privacy of the patient and will help the assessor to build a focus on the procedure. Proper environment while doing the assessment would be very therapeutic. Here’s how to do the evaluation before the alcohol and drug test.

  • Build a special connection and trust with the drug or alcohol abuser by defining confidentiality and questioning the patient individually. Be cautious not to act in an exaggerated or conceited manner instead conduct the assessment in a sensible way. It will make the patient more contented and relaxed. Don’t allow yourself to be argumentative or judgmental, as this will avoid transparency in the interview and might worsen the condition.


  • Obtain the complete history or background of the patient’s alcohol and drug abuse. Ask the patient whether the drug use has stopped, reduced or improved. Find out what kinds of drugs have been used regularly. Inquire about the regularity, interval and period of usage, how the drug was managed and any treatment procedures used in the past.
  • Perform the initial physical inspection by detecting the intoxication level or withdrawal symptoms of the patient. Check out for signs such as widened pupils, sleepiness and slurred speech to identify the level of withdrawal. Other negative signs to watch for are misperception and insanity.
  • Do the second physical check for medical complications by perceiving the mental condition of the patient as well as vital signs and detects marks that shows needle use. Be observant for swollen lymph nodes and difficulties in the major organs including heart, lungs and liver.
  • Identify whether the patient has the determination and longing to control himself from dealing with alcohol or drugs. If the patient is not eager to change, additional treatment will be caught up.
