  • Build a special connection and trust with the drug or alcohol abuser by defining confidentiality and questioning the patient individually.   • Perform the initial physical inspection by detecting the intoxication level or withdrawal symptoms of the patient. Check out for signs such as widened pupils, sleepiness and slurred speech to identify the level of withdrawal. Other negative signs to watch for are misperception and insanity.
  • Do the second physical check for medical complications by perceiving the mental condition of the patient as well as vital signs and detects marks that shows needle use. Be observant for swollen lymph nodes and difficulties in the major organs including heart, lungs and liver.
  • Identify whether the patient has the determination and longing to control himself from dealing with alcohol or drugs. If the patient is not eager to change, additional treatment will be caught up.
